Island Women Speak | Stonington Opera House

January 30, 2020 @ 7:00 pm

Opera House Arts’ Island Women Speak, the popular women’s storytelling event at the Stonington Opera House, is coming back for a fourth iteration on Thursday, January 30th at 7pm. Seven women, seven generations, seven true stories – told live from the stage.

Following the wildly successful inaugural evening in January of 2018, and equally popular events in May 2018 and January 2019, this storytelling initiative returns to Opera House Arts in the hands of director Debbie Weil.

“At every one of our events, the audience has been spellbound by how vulnerable our storytellers are willing to be on stage. That is the mark of great storytelling, of course,” said Weil.

This evening’s theme is centered around moments when life surprises you. Seven speakers will each perform a five-minute personal story they have written on the topic, revealing truths about their lives on the island. The project is based on New York City’s Generation Women, a monthly event that features women authors and storytellers from each decade, as well as on The Moth, a nonprofit group based in NYC that is dedicated to the art and craft of storytelling. Weil, a podcast host and nonfiction writing and storytelling coach, is a past chair of the board of Opera House Arts.

The seven storytellers represent seven generations of Deer Isle residents and include Esther Adams, Team 20; Alix Sarain, Team 30; Brighid Doherty, Team 40; Julie Eaton, Team 50; Nancy Wynne, Team 60; Sue Steed, Team 70; and Judith Keenan, Team 80.

All are welcome for this evening of true stories, surprising revelations, warmth, and humor. Local band Isle of Jazz will play before the show in the Opera House lobby at 5:30pm.

Tickets are $10 at the door. A portion of the event’s proceeds will be donated to the Island Community Center.
